Obituary:
VLIEGER Robert William De Vlieger, aged 81, was taken peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father on May 12, 2006. He was born June 18, 1924 to John and Winnie (Fongers) Tornga, and the adopted son of Cornelius and Pauline (Fongers) De Vlieger, his mother's sister and her husband. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1942, and from Calvin College in 1946. In 1954, he bought the Mapes Insurance Agency from which he retired in 1988. While working at Mapes Insurance, he created many successful business ventures. In 1960, he founded Bond Corporation, and in later years started several other companies. He continued working at the office every day up until this past November. He was a hard working, unselfish and generous man who cared very much for others. He and his wife were world travelers, and enjoyed their winters in Florida. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 51 years, Charmaine, and his children, Robert (Sandie) De Vlieger, and Janet (Paul) Cerbin, and his grandchildren, Denise (Marc) Teitsma, Andrew, and Matthew De Vlieger, and Jason (Cristina) and Kristine Cerbin, and his great grandchildren, Michael and Lana Cerbin. He is also survived by his brother, Gerald Tornga, and several sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday 10:00 a.m. at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Winn officiating. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery.
